Caramelized Onion Sloppy Joe Recipe With Swiss Cheese

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup dry pink wine (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

For the Sloppy Joes

1 pound ground beef

1 onion, chopped

3 tablespoons tomato sauce

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon yellow mustard

Salt and pepper to taste

6 hamburger buns

1/2 cup Swiss cheese, shredded (optional)

Peel and slice 2 massive yellow onions.

Heat 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter in a large skillet over medium warmth.

Add the onions to the skillet and cook dinner, stirring regularly, until they’re softened and beginning to brown, about 15 minutes.

Reduce the warmth to low, add 1 tablespoon of brown sugar, and cook for an additional 15 minutes, or till the onions are deeply caramelized and really gentle.

Scrape the underside of the skillet to loosen any browned bits.

Remove the skillet from the heat and put aside.

To Make the Sloppy Joes

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 hamburger buns
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese

Instructions:

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high warmth. Add the bottom beef and prepare dinner, breaking it up into small pieces, till browned. Drain any extra fats.
  2. Add the onion to the skillet and cook, stirring sometimes, until softened and golden brown, about 10 minutes.
  3. Stir within the brown sugar, ketchup, water, Worcestershire sauce, mustard powder, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook dinner till the sauce has thickened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Serve the sloppy joe turkey Joes on hamburger buns topped with Swiss cheese.
